What is Spyware? Spyware are files or programs created by marketing firms and publishers that allows them to gather information without your knowledge. These programs are secretly downloaded to your computer through the installation of a new software program, responding to a pop-up ad while online, or even a software virus. So just by surfing the web, downloading digital music, or reading email they can infect your computer. What does Spyware do? Spyware allows these undetected programs to track your web browsing activity, identifying which websites you frequently visit, what you purchase online and extreme forms can even capture your credit card information. The information is then relayed to advertisers or other third parties of interest who will then send you targeted "pop-up" ads, email solicitations, or leave your system vulnerable to identity theft. Most Spyware is not a serious security threat. However, there are also some variations that are more serious in that they can take command of your browser and force you to web sites that may be inappropriate. Others can reinstall themselves after they have been removed to continue being a nuisance. What type of problems should I look for if I think my computer is infected? Most users will experience several symptoms that affect the smooth operation of their PC. First and foremost it will slow down your PC. If you are online, you will notice your browsing capability to be more sluggish because it is relaying the information back and forth to the marketing company. You also may experience your PC constantly freezing up requiring you to reboot, or crash all together. How do I avoid Spyware or remove it if my computer has been affected? Contrary to what most believe, anti-virus software does not necessarily detect Spyware. If you are active online, and have never scanned your computer with a Spyware remover software, your computer is infected. Again, many are harmless and if you are not experiencing the symptoms listed above, you are not at much of a risk. However, to improve your computer’s performance, we highly recommend running a Spyware scan every 30-60 days. There are several software programs available at your nearest computer retailer. However, there are two very popular programs that are free to download from the Internet. Use the links below to download one or both (they do at times identify different variations) for your personal use. Adaware SE Personal by Lavasoft Spybot Search & Destroy by PepiMK Software
